My Way by Paul Anka 1969; A Song Lyrics Analysis

* Lyrics

My Way
by
Paul Anka 1969
And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full.
I've traveled each and every highway;
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But ...view middle of the document...

Anka's English lyrics are unrelated to the original French song or the earlier English version.

This song "My Way" is often quoted as the most covered song in history. Some of those covers are Elvis Presley, Robbie Willams, U2 dan Cristian Slater and many others. Even Ahmad Dhani, an Indonesian musician, the President of Republik Cinta Management took a part in covering this song. It has inspired many people in any generation in many ways by its lyric. Although it is a really bad idea to sing this song in any Karaoke Bar in Philippines, until now it is still a good choice to sing in a private karaoke room in any country.

* Origin

Paul Anka a Canadian songwriter wrote this song after hearing the original 1967 French pop song, Comme d'habitude (as usual) performed by Claude François, while on holiday in the south of France. He flew to Paris to negotiate the rights to the song. He acquired publishing rights at no cost except the melody's rights kept by the authors. Two years later, had a dinner in Florida with Frank Sinatra and "a couple of Mob guys" at which Sinatra said: "I'm quitting the business. I'm sick of it, I'm getting the hell out.". Surprised of what Frank said, back in New York, Anka re-wrote the original French song for Sinatra, subtly altering the melodic structure and changing the lyrics. He really wrote the lyric for Sinatra and as if he was Frank Sinatra.

Frank Sinatra recorded his version of the song on December 30, 1968, and it was released in early 1969 on the album of the same name and as a single. It reached No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 2 on the Easy Listening chart in the US. In the UK, the single achieved a still unmatched record, becoming the recording with the most weeks inside the Top 40, spending 75 weeks from April 1969 to September 1971. It spent a further 49 weeks in the Top 75 but never bettered the No. 5 slot achieved upon its first chart run. And this song became Frank Sinatra’s signature song.

* Analysis

The songs has a total of 36 lines which are split into 8 stanza with 6 stanzas as the verses and the two others are the chorus.

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

This stanza tells us about what Frank Sinatra felt in his 80s. There are two meanings for the first two lines:
* It says about and old man who just knew somehow the death is coming and surrounding him. Facing the last chapter of his journey, the last episode of his life.
* Because this song was written for Frank Sinatra, it is fair to locate Sinatra as the subject. Based on what he said to Anka while having dinner together in Florida 1968 that Sinatra was quitting the business, he was sick of it, and he was getting the hell out, it means it was closer to Sinatra facing his end of carrier and his glorious, his last curtain in stage and his last red carpet for he wanted to end all of this.
In the two...
