The Five Power Types
Referent power is the type of power that I use the most, because I usually gain power that is gained as a result of being admired by subordinates in the workplace. I like this type of power better in the workplace, because it is developed by trust from your employees. When I was a team leader I used this type of form of power it worked very well, because people felt a part of what was being done, that their opinions matter, and they showed respect to me as well. Referent power is hard to gain because you have to prove to other as a leader that you’re not just looking out for your interest you’re also looking out for theirs as well. Out of all the five different powers (Coercive, Legitimate, Reward, Referent, and Expert ...view middle of the document...
Coercive Power management when used right can be effective, but if used wrong can be little an employee. If used right it gets everyone going in the right direction and keeps them on the right track. Legitimate power is when someone in authority complies with orders given to them because they believe that the position or title that the person holds gives him the right to use that power. I see this type of power ran a lot in a hospital setting, because it usually is ran in a chain of command when used. Legitimate Power can be very effective in jobs that require a lot of attention to detail and have stressful situations. Reward Power I have worked with that type of power before in a smaller business it works great at first, but sometimes can because problems were people expect it and work for the wrong reasons. Also if a company is not able to do the rewards it can cause upset employee along with employee not understanding why they didn’t get the reward. Referent is the type of power I use along with a lot of other places I have worked for before. This type of power makes employee feel like a team, because the leader is given that power gained by respect or being admired. Expert power setting I see in schools or in Hospital and am not a bad power because the skill and experience is there to better the workplace. Also expert power other can learn from that knowledge and experience when the power is used right especially if you watch. In the case that I talked about the five powers being used that I have seen they were used correctly. I have seen the power used incorrectly and it didn’t work well for those people the used the power wrong. They usually ended up being replaced or causing a very negative place to work.
