It is considered as an influential tool for acquiring a greater level for the desired needs and it acts as collaboration between a company and the company’s employees.

Motivating employees is necessary for any organization. Having a highly motivated staff and in general, workforce, means having a highly productive range of staff and employees in the company. Staff will be directed towards achieving required goals, organization work environment will be co-operative and there will be and overall improved efficiency.
To motivate employees, a manager must know what type of motivation method must be used in order to energize and direct an employee, whether it is Intrinsic or Extrinsic type of motivation.

2.1 Types of Motivation
Intrinsic motivation is defined as an individual’s own desires and willingness and satisfaction to do a certain task without being influenced by any external motivating factor, for e.g. cars, free travelling tickets, etc. It is a method of being internally motivated towards doing an activity of its inherent satisfaction.
Extrinsic is the opposite of intrinsic motivation. It comes from the outside of the individual and is mainly affected by external factors which are needed to acquire to achieve an increase in motivation. Examples of extrinsic could be taken as monetary rewards, bonuses, pay raises, higher grades, etc.

2.2 Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory
A psychologist named Abraham Maslow proposed a theory about hierarchy needs of motivation in 1943. His theory was based on human motivation and human behavior as well as the basic needs in life. Maslow mentioned that humans are usually motivated by having unsatisfied needs. Maslow proposed that human motivation consists of five basic needs which are:

I. Physiological – These needs are usually considered as the most necessary needs in the hierarchy motivation as they are vital to survival. Maslow mentioned that other needs are considered as secondary needs until the physiological needs are fulfilled. An example for this is food, water, clothes, sex and shelter.

II. Safety – The next phase is safety which basically refers to the need of being safe from physiological, physical, occupational, financial harm or damage. Examples for safety needs are healthcare insurance, safe neighborhoods and job security.

III. Belongingness – Belongingness refers to the emotional needs such as acceptance, affection and companionship and the desire to love and be loved. This hierarchy is of less importance compared to the physiological and safety needs. Such examples can be taken as family, friends and intimacy.

IV. Esteem – Esteem needs is an essential need that comes after the first three needs have been fully satisfied. Esteem needs mainly focuses on aspects such self-confidence, recognition and reputation and strength.
