Motivation Essay

During the first field visit to Bolich middle school the observation consisted of two different language arts class rooms. The classroom that was observed first was a class of eighth graders. There were Twenty-three students, broken down to thirteen girls and ten boys. As I entered the room it was the middle of their class. The classroom setting had rows of desks facing the front of the room, although the teacher’s desk was in the back of the room facing the student’s backs. The class that contained no students with IEP’s seemed to have been alert and ready for the upcoming assignment that the teacher had for them. The class was reading out of their assigned class book, and the way they would choose someone to read was a cup of Popsicle sticks with the student’s names on them. The teacher would draw a stick and that person would start reading right away. (Field notebook, October 4, 2012, p. 1) The students got a ticket which was a reward for doing something good like answering questions from the teacher; this was a school wide incentive program. The tickets were collected and entered into school wide drawings for prizes, and there was also an event called “Fun Friday” where if the students name was drawn they could miss their Friday study hall to go play games and socialize with fellow students. (Field notebook, October 4, 2012, p. 1)
Towards the end of the class the teacher went over the assignment that was due the following day, she did some in class and then let the students decide to work in groups to finish. The students that decided to get in groups were working together to get their assignment done. Overall this class was a well behaved well-mannered group of students there were no type of disruptions that caused the learning in the classroom to stop. The next class however seemed to be the complete opposite. About half of the class came to class without their book, the teacher did not act surprised, she just sent them to their lockers to get them. While waiting the bell rang to begin class but many of the students were not back yet and the rest of the class that did have their book with them were out of their seats socializing with other classmates(Field notebook, October 4, 2012, p. 3). The class eventually started about four minutes late. Even when the two teachers were trying to start the class there was a lot of disruptions. Students just did not listen and did not seem motivated to learn. The objective for the class was the same as the previous one; they were reading the same story and doing the same in class assignment.
The process of picking a student to read was the same although many times when a name was called there was a lot of whining and complaining by some of the students picked who did not want to read. The ones that did read were very adamant about receiving their reward ticket. At the time when the class was to start the in class assignment, many students were not paying attention and didn’t even have the assignment out and ready as the teacher was going over it. This class did not get the opportunity to work in groups like the previous class did. One of the students was not on task and the teacher asked how far along he was, his reply was that he did not start it but it would be done by the next day.
