Millennials Overcoming Stereotypes
Millennials, or also known as Generation Y, are individuals who were born between the late 1980’s to early 2000’s. They are known for being entitled, the trophy kids, distracted by technology, and frequent job changers. With generation gaps, there are different characteristics in the working environment that each generation brings. Even generations besides the Millennials have also experienced different stereotypes that they were labeled with. As they joined the working environment, they had their negative attributes they were labeled with just as the Millennials. These attributes need to be addressed and taken care of by the employer for productivity, just as with other generations. As Kapoor, C., & Solomon, N. (2011) stated, “Employers must foster a work environment that aids productivity for every generation; they must give their employees the information and skills needed to understand the generational characteristics of their co‐workers to create understanding among employees.”  Conforming to Millennials is not the only thing mentioned by these authors. They reference that changes should be made or understood by all generations. Millennials have positive characteristics but oftentimes, employers are unable to look past these stereotypes and labels. Millennials are labeled as stated by Pummer, Chris (2014) as “enthusiastic, adaptable, entrepreneurial and skilled multitaskers — and as lazy, entitled and unmanageable job hoppers.” As they begin to come into the workforce, Millennials are beginning to alter the work environment from previous generations before them, and are shaping it for years to come, which in part may be the reason they are labeled as being entitled. Millennials bring different yet positive characteristics to the working environment, regardless of their stereotypes. They have positive attributes that allow them to overcome their labels, which includes their keen technical skills. As Pummer, Chris (2014) also stated in his article, “Employers may expect that leaning heavily on Millennials tech fluency will translate into an even fast workplace with appreciable bottom-line benefits.”  Many employers actually expect that their technological dependency will create a fast paced environment, however their dependency leads to more than just it being fast paced. It leads to other benefits for themselves, employers, employees, and multiple generations.
Benefits of Technology and Mentors
Technology is an ever expanding field that began during their generation. It just so happened that this generation grew up with such technologies. Their use of the technology is what sets them apart from generations before them. Thielfoldt, D., & Scheef, D.
