Men and Women in the Workplace
All across American there are millions of people that go to work each day to earn a living. In recent years, the amount of money that we are bringing home is not nearly as much as we have been paid in the past due to the national recession the United States is experiencing. When looking at specific careers, there still seems to be some discrepancies in the pay for a man versus a woman. Despite what the average American income is, men are currently making a higher salary than women in the same career field because of different standards set for each gender.

This is not a valid reason as to why, but it does give us some more insight into the reasoning companies have.
There are different actions being taken on the government level to try and create equality in the workplace. One of the more recent actions taken has been to try and get congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. This particular bill would hold employers more accountable for wage discrimination against women (Bassett 2014). Some people feel this legislation would hurt women in the workplace, preventing them from getting jobs altogether. More companies would hesitate to hire a woman knowing that they would need to compensate her even though they may not be deserving of the pay. However, it is some companies that take advantage of the situation, which is why congress is addressing the issue to begin with.
In the past, women stayed home to take care of the kids and household. Things have significantly changed where women now make up almost half of the workforce and many are breadwinners for their families. With the recession, many people lost their jobs, making it a single income household. Many of those households have the women as the income producer. When women have less money that means they are not able to provide all that they can for their families and for their futures. Another concern for some members of congress is the increase in the amount of lawsuits that would develop against employers. Hopefully in the next couple of months developments will take place to where a decision can be made to benefit both parties of the workplace.
