Mass Media Messages and Effects
When it comes to mass media, it is important to not only understand the different roles the media has in society but to also recognize with every message, there is an effect. The message that the media source is giving may have a negative or positive effect on an individual, a group of people or on society as a whole. Messages from mass media can and will have an effect also on their own organization and at times have had to certain repercussions when not following certain rules set that they must adhere to. Free expression protects both the people and the media from government limitations on what they can say. Indecency is a vague law because the court says media is guaranteed the freedom to create pornography, and citizens have the freedom to access it. The court does have a stipulation on material that goes too far, however the rules are vague as to what is too far. The only guaranteed group that is protected is children when it relates to sexually explicit material to children, which has a zero tolerance. (Vivian, 2011, Chapter 16).
There are several issues in mass media that may cause an audience to be reluctant to support a particular mass media source. Persuasion versus coercion has become an issue since critics point out that most ads are one-sided due to the fact that they do not give an option to the audience. This type of behavior in mass media violates the principle of honesty that is almost mandatory when utilizing a persuasive communication format. Although many people find advertising in media to be annoying, it is important to understand that it is important in mass communication since so much of its revenue comes from advertising dollars. The dilemma with this is that there becomes an ethics issue since there are times when media sources face the issue of covering stories or ignoring certain stories that may have a negative image on one of their advertisers.
The issue of terrorism and mass media also exists due to terrorism groups now utilizing some of the more recent sources of mass media, such as YouTube and Facebook to send their message and for purposes of recruiting others to join their groups. The issues that exist with this type of utilization of digital media is recruiting terrorists to join their groups but also since sites like YouTube can be accessed by anyone, there is a high risk of the wrong people such as children viewing the wrong types of material that may not be suitable for them. In electronic mass media, the government has stepped in to prevent certain material from reaching society and as well limiting which audiences can view certain material. The organization that was created to govern programming in electronic mass media is the Federal Communications Commission, better known as the FCC. Although the FCC regulates most devices that require radio airwaves, such as c.b. radios and remote control airplanes, the main objective with the FCC is to govern the content of broadcasted material in order to protect people from being exposed to certain content that may not be suitable for immature audiences or age inappropriate material.
