MARKS AND SPENCER’S CASE STUDY

Q1) To what extent is M&S an MNE? How can they become a better MNE?

M&S can be called an MNE due to many reasons or facts.

They are one of the UK’s leading retailers, with over 21 million people visiting their stores each week. They offer stylish, high quality, great value clothing and home products, as well as outstanding quality foods, responsibly sourced from around 2,000 suppliers globally. They employ over 75,000 people and their main headquarter is in the UK where they have over 600 UK stores, plus an expanding international business where they operate in around 337 stores in 41 territories overseas.

China has seemed to move to a market driven economy and M&S can cater to the huge demand and supply of their goods and services. M&S currently operates in India through its joint venture Marks and Spencer Reliance India Pvt Ltd, in which the British parent firm has a 51 per cent. The firm has an ambitious expansion plans in place, with a target of opening at least 50 new stores in India over the next five years. Another thing that can be achieved by the company is reducing their cost. M&S can look into geographic areas where they can get the labour to produce goods and services at a lower price E.g. China, India. Instead of setting a new factory they can hook themselves with a local factory/distributor. In this way they can produce their goods at a cheaper rate since these countries have abundance of raw materials. Transportation costs will also be low and so will assembling and packaging. In this way they can eliminate costs and cater to the people’s demands quickly and efficiently. These small factories/local distributor or suppliers can serve as a backbone to M&S and can also help M&S as a producer to maintain a competitive position. With the rise of ‘Asian Bloc’ that includes India, China, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan. M&S can use these countries and gain a foothold in this Asian Bloc in the rising years...
