On March 7, 1997, one specific man was born to be the best person that he could. On this day, my mother Cheryl Adams came in to McKennan Hospital to get her water broken at 8:00 a.m. With no difficulties but a lengthy labor, a baby boy made his way into the world. At 6:34 p.m. at McKennan Hopsital in Sioux Falls, SD, my mother delivered a healthy baby who weighed in at 7 lbs.and 7 oz. and measured 21’’. I inherited brown hair and hazel eyes. The full name given to me was Mitchel Ray Gordon Adams. My mother Cheryl and father Don liked the name Mitchel. Also on this day, a 1-year activities ban was passed for students who do drugs. Students would be barred from school sports and extracurricular activities for one year under a plan approved in the South Dakota Legislature. High school students with second drug offenses would be eliminated from such activities and felony drug convictions would also end athletic careers. State-funded scholarships would no longer be available to those students as well (Smolowitz). The teen driver bill goes to the governor on March 7 The house and senate both agreed to a bill which would contain certain restrictions of driver’s licenses. The bill would allow 14-year-olds to drive alone from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m and 15-year-olds could drive until 8 p.m. without a parent. The bill also outlined the length of time young drivers would lose their license for. A 14 or 15-year-old who has an alcohol violation would lose their license for one year. Also, if a driver were to speed more than 20 mph over the speed limit, the loss of their license would last for 90 days (Kafka).
Many events surfaced the national scene of March 7, 1997. Flooding appeared along the Missouri River which also included South Dakota. There was more than a 50-50 chance of flooding on the river, and people in low-lying areas of the Missouri River valley in Kansas and Missouri were at the most risk (Flooded towns fear ‘unpredictable backwater’ next). Headline news also in the country also included a survey which found optimism on retirement from the baby boomers. Most of them expect their lives to be full and satisfying. Seventy-five percent of them would choose to keep on keeping on: to continue working part of full-time (Peterson 4A). Also on this day, Steven Hoffen was jailed. He sold off sums of bonds to unsuspecting investors. Hoffen was ordered to pay $462 million in restitution to the innocent (The People’s History).
News from all around the world flooded news stations across the globe on this day. Israel decided to withdraw troops from part of the West Bank in order to contribute to the peace process. It is the first phase in a three-stage pullback to be completed by mid-1998. Israel wants to retain 50 percent of the West Bank by the end of the third pullout, while the Palestinians expect Israel to hand over 90 percent (Linzer). In other international news, police in Kashmir find three rebel muslims killed. Three leaders of a Islamic Mujahideen guerrilla group were found dead after they were involved in a shootout. In incredible number of 20,000 people have been killed in the rebellion since 1990 (World News Briefs).
