The Flower is the main subject of this picture. She uses watercolour and ink to create her images, which are very bold and colourful. The detail within the picture is mainly of black lines and is very creative. An example is the thick black lines on the outside of the flower to emphasis the importance of the flower. Another is the leaves and how the black swirls off to create a leaf affect. The important line of the picture is in the leaves, where the veins are in black. The patterns consist of swirls in the background to the dots up the leaves or around the centre of the flower. The colours used are very bright and I like how they make the picture “happy”.
I like how Neuman uses bright colours to create happy images. She also uses black in the most appropriate ways to ...view middle of the document...
In her early interests, she created realistic pen & ink and pencil drawings to earn money throughout high school and college. She took some time off of art, but later took an art class which restocked her love of art.
Sims uses many differents subject matters usually in the area of nature. This particular piece is of iris’ near a meadow. Sims used acrylic paints to complete this painting. There is lost of shading being used in the foreground and background. There aren’t any lines that deal with adding features to the painting, but lines do make up the outlining of the stems of the flowers. The flowers have interesting shapes, but also the stems and the leaves surrounding the foreground. I don’t think there are any patterns in this painting. The colours of this painting are very interesting, and I like how the flowers stand out because of their contrast in color compared to other colours in the painting. The stems are long and narrow.
I love how the flowers are so bold and that the blue/purple colours of them stand out to the greens that make up the rest of the painting. I don’t like how there are a lot of dull colours used to shade. I also like how she does paintings that are familiar to me because of where I live.
I think that Sims wants to share the beautiful nature around her, but in a more realistic sense than Neuman. She varies from tropical to dessert and northwest types of flowers. By using shapes and designs for shading, it adds a different feel in the paintings than realistic shading.
Carol is very fascinating to me because she comes from very close to my home in America, living in Oregon. She has many achievements throughout the northwest and is viewed by many people.
