Low Fat Diet with Exercise Versus Diet Pills
"If it is too good to be true, then it probably is". In the United States of America, obesity has become a concern for the common public. People get increasingly attracted to anything that claims a quick and effective weight loss technique. Although most people understand that they can lose weight through dieting and regular exercising, they get easily fascinated about the advertisements of diet pills that offer a slim physique within a few months without the hazards of exercising or diet control. This paper is comparing and contrasting the two methods for weight loss: ...view middle of the document...

Although results can be seen in a couple of months, it is very important to sustain the lifestyle changes to get long term results. This process of losing weight is natural and health. (Pillinger, 2014).
Many people consider prescription weight loss drugs or diet pills as an effective method to shed their extra weight. The advocates of such drugs claim that these drugs are suitable to treat obesity for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above and for those with a BMI of 27 or above who have developed obesity-related conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. There are different types of diet pills available in the market. ‘Appetite suppressants’ is one type of weight loss medications that promote weight loss by decreasing appetite. They can be obtained by a doctor's prescription or can be bought over the counter. Phentermine is one of the common prescription appetite suppressants and Belviq is used for long-term use in treating obesity and is approved by the FDA. The drug Qsymia is a combination of phentermine with the drug topiramate, which causes weight loss by increasing feelings of fullness, by making foods less tempting and also by increasing calorie burning. ‘Fat absorption inhibitor’ is yet another type of prescription weight loss drug. They prevent the body from absorbing fats and make the unabsorbed fat be eliminated in bowel movements. A typical example of this type of drug in the U.S is Orlistat. It blocks about 30% of dietary fat from being absorbed. Orlistat is available over-the-counter as Alli and by prescription as Xenical. This is the most popular kind of diet pills that offer miraculous weight loss and satisfaction for its users as it leads to a 5% to 10% weight loss when taken along with a low calorie/low-fat diet during the first six months of use. (Prescription Weight Loss Drugs, 2014).
Having noted the effects of the two methods, it is now necessary to take a look into the possible side effects of both these two weight loss methods. For a diet and exercise plan, there are not any short term or long term side effects other than the negative effects caused due to a crash diet or an excessive physical exercise. For many people dieting can be very frustrating and may feel it is impossible to practice. However, low fat diets and exercise have been proven to be effective strategies for weight loss. Those programs that offer a combination of diet and exercise plans for weight loss are helpful in developing a healthy lifestyle for their clients even if they may not accomplish a quick result of weight loss. If a low fat diet and regular exercise plan are practiced efficiently, it can prevent diseases and high blood pressure. (Swafford, n.d).
On the other hand, the side effects of diet pills are many. Some are already proven, and some others yet to be scientifically proved. Just a few pills such as Meridia and Xenical have been clinically studied and proved as effective in shedding weight. But still a...
