Who Are They Really?
Victoria Lord of the flies can be considered a fable where the characters are symbols for ideas. Each character, Ralf, Simon, Piggy, Jack and Roger show qualities and traits that humans may symbolize. Ralf being order. Simon being goodness. Piggy being intelligence. Jack being savagery. And at last Roger, being extreme beyond hyperbole.

Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law.”(Ch 4 Page 64) Roger had the potential to be a brutal and blood lusting but his conscious stops him at first. Further into the book we see that his conscious fades away as it is implied that he has beaten the other children. “Roger spoke. ‘if you’re fooling us-’ Immediately after this, there came a gasp, and a squeal of pain.” (Ch 12 Page 213)
Jack lead an unbridled savagery that drove him to kill. His desired for power made him irresponsible. He created the ‘hunters’ but failed to meet responsibility because he wanted to hunt. “ ’I want to talk about smoke! Don’t you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig!’” (Ch 3, Page 55) Jack decided that meat was more important for the group than fallowing orders and keeping a signal fire burning. His desire for power lead him to create a whole new ‘tribe’ on the other side of the island. Jack then created a ‘blissful...
