Entre os 27 Estados-membros da União Europeia, Portugal ocupa a 21ª posição e é o sétimo país da UE com menor abertura da economia. Este indicador, que quantifica e compara a inserção da economia de um país no mundo, ultrapassa os 319,23% no Luxemburgo, o país da Europa com maior grau de abertura, conhecido pela atratividade da política fiscal. Tratando-se da internacionalização do restaurante Balada Mix para Portugal, este indicador acaba por não ser o mais desejável. O Governo Português não impõe quaisquer restrições à entrada de empresas internacionais, no entanto, a alta carga tributária e as dificuldades burocráticas inerentes à abertura de um negócio acabam por afastar investidores e empresas.

PARIDADE DE PODER AQUISITIVO
O Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) expresso em paridade do poder de compra estava em Portugal 22,6% abaixo da média dos países da União Europeia (UE) em 2011, segundo o Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE). Os portugueses ganhavam, em 2011, 77,4% da média dos seus parceiros europeus, uma descida face a 2010, onde o valor era de 80,3%. O Luxemburgo está à frente, já que em 2011o nível de riqueza era de 271%, seguindo-se a Holanda com 131%.
Há apenas oito países da UE onde os cidadãos, em média, são mais pobres do que em Portugal: Eslováquia, Estónia, Lituânia, Hungria, Polónia, Letónia, Roménia e, no fim da tabela, a Bulgária, onde cada cidadão do país ganhou, em 2011, 46% da média europeia. Os números apresentados por este indicador mostram claramente que os portugueses ganham, em média, consideravelmente menos do que a média europeia. Uma baixa paridade do poder aquisitivo repercute-se em mais baixos níveis de consumo, o que afeta diretamente os restaurantes.

COEFICIENTE DE GINI

Segundo dados do EUROSTAT, em 2009, Portugal, a par de Espanha, registava o terceiro valor mais elevado do Índice de Gini da União Europeia. Apenas a Letónia e a Lituânia registaram uma distribuição de rendimentos mais desigual, com um coeficiente de Gini de 36% e 37% respectivamente. O valor deste indicador na UE-27 é de 31%. Por outro lado, é na Eslovénia, na Suécia e na Hungria que se verifica o resultado mais favorável neste conjunto de países (24%). Assim, segundo este indicador, em 2009 estes eram os três países mais igualitários na distribuição do rendimento.  

O Gráfico 2 ilustra a evolução do coeficiente de Gini em Portugal e na União Europeia (UE-15 e UE-27). O valor deste indicador manteve-se relativamente estável no período analisado, quer em Portugal, quer na UE-15. Importa contudo realçar que em 2006 e 2007 o coeficiente de Gini diminuiu em Portugal face aos anos anteriores, enquanto na UE-15 aumentou ligeiramente. Por outro lado, o valor apresentado por Portugal em 2009 é o mais baixo de todo o período aqui considerado.
