Letter Of Advice Essay

630 words - 3 pages

Dear Mike and Jasmine,

Congratulations on your new engagement. Your mom and I had a conversation the other day and she said that your were looking for some advice on your relationship. She stated that you and Mike are having a difficult time in the communication area. I am taking an interpersonal communication class through Ashford University this semester and wanted to see if I could possibly shed some light on what I have learned in this class about communication. The key to a healthy marriage and relationship is communication. Now I may not be the right person to give you some advice on how the two of you could improve your relationship by communicating better. But I have a few tips on things the both of you can do to improve your interpersonal communicational skills. First learning how to recognize how self-concept and defensive and ...view middle of the document...

People have desires to be able to connect, participate, and share with others. Communication cannot be avoided for even if you choose not to communicate, you are communicating the desire not to communicate. That being said, the biggest fallout about communication is choosing not to, because you are even when you do not. The worse of not communicating is the perception your partner “reads” from your uncommunicative message. When you are experiencing disappointment, or just don’t feel good, the images that your partner see’s inhibits effective communication
Your concept of self plays a big role in the way you have interpersonal communication with yourself and others. When you a high regard for your self can makes it easier for you to communicate with other people because you feel like you are important and that people will see you have a high regard for you because you carry yourself with confidence. But on the other side if you have a low regard for yourself, and if you feel like you’re no good and you are not smart or pretty you will have a harder time communicating with other people because you will feel that you are not worth their time. When I was young I had a low self esteem because my mom would get mad at me and she would yell and tell me that I was never gonna make anything out of my self , so when it came to interacting with other children I felt that I wasn’t as good as those kids. So I distanced my self from them and that made them pick on me. The other children call names and this would make me feel that I was dumb so I would not want to speak to other people because I was not good enough for them to talk with. Now that I am grown and have a husband and a child I have a better outlook of myself. I am a good person, a good, a good mother and am worth communicating with. You need to have a good self concept in order to have a good relationship with someone else.
