Leadership Models Essay

Abstract
It is not possible to reflect every aspect of each theory, due to the complexities of the models and the wide-ranging opinions of scholars that have studied each concept over many years. However, the purpose of this paper is to discuss four leadership models that are not only interesting but will support growth to those aspiring to become scholars, practitioners and leaders in a particular field of study. These theories were selected to provide information and to offer a review of the characteristics and main points of significance of each theory. The study of leadership has produced a multitude of perspectives and theories. Each major premise about leadership is accurate under certain circumstances, and as a result, there is not a consensus on a specific theory of leadership “(McFadden, Eakin, Beck-Frazier & McGlone, 2005, “Conclusion” para 1).

Transformational Leadership Model

Transformational leaders provide followers with a vision as well as the motivation to accomplish a mission and or goal. These leaders also help raise the moral fortitude of their followers. “Transformational leadership is seen as a process in which leaders and followers inspire one another to elevate moral conduct. It can be used to influence both superiors and subordinates. Those under its influence feel they are bettering themselves (Clawson, 2008, “Transformation Approach,” para 1).

In addition, the efforts of Transformational leaders are to use influence to change followers, in most circumstances followers become better individuals, “ …transformational leaders may expand a follower’s portfolio of needs ; may transform a followers’ self interest; and may elevate a follower’s need” (Couto, 1995, p. 102).

Transformational Leadership is contemporary and used as a model for leadership in many organizations to motivate and inspire followers to feel good about themselves and their leader.

Transactional Leadership Model

Transactional leaders communicate clear, structured expectations to ensure that followers and workers comprehend what is required and anticipated to receive rewards. It is also understood, yet may not be stated that there is a punishment if desired behavior or performance is not obtained and formal systems of discipline are typically in place.
According to Sarros and Santora (2001), contingent rewards and management by exception are the two factors that make up transitional leadership from a cost benefit perspective for companies and organizations. Contingent rewards and or praise are given when specified outcomes are achieved. Avolio and Yammarino (2007) indicate that contingency rewards are positive and typically effective in motivating followers. Management by exception has negative consequences “…because the leader monitors deviations from norms and provides corrective actions” (Avolio and Yammarino, 2007, p. 10). “Laissez-faire Leadership: not managing much at all; ignoring the problems” ((Clawson, 2008, “Transactional Behavior,” para 4). Yet another factor of Transactional leadership that also has a negative connotation regarding management.

Transactional leadership is the model that management typically uses when they provide organization objectives to employees or followers to obtain a particular outcome in a work environment.

Situational Leadership Model
