Compare and contrast two leaders, at least one of whom must be a business leader.

Which of the two was the more effective leader? Why? What skills did they demonstrate? These two leaders must be explicitly named in your assignment and will be drawn from your knowledge of them or from biographies of modern-day leaders. Provide enough details of these two leaders so that the reader, who does not know them, will be able to follow the points about them that you are making. Your assignment should demonstrate that you know what make a successful leader, manager and entrepreneur in any situation.

1. Introduction

Leadership has been defined in a simple context as being the process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals, with the more complicated definition involving the leader, the followers and the situation (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy 2012).

Using two very different leaders in this assignment, one being Steve Jobs and the other being Robert Mugabe, their similarities and differences will be distinguished, the more effective leader will be determined and the reasoning why they are more effective will be explained. These determinations will all be made while considering the leader, the followers and the situation.

2. Steve Jobs and leadership.

Steve Jobs was born in San Francisco, California on 24 February 1955 and was adopted at birth by Paul and Clara Jobs. His biological mother was Joanne Schieble and biological father was Abdulfattah “John” Jandali. When he was young, the family move to Palo Alto and in junior school his teachers wanted to move him up a few grades as he was very smart, but his parents declined. In high school he met his future business partner Steve Wozniak and after dropping out of college after the first semester, he travelled to India where he explored his spiritual side and developed one of his mantras ‘Focus and simplicity’

At the age of 21, he and Wozniak started Apple computers from is parents garage funding the venture from the sale of his Volswagen bus and Wozniak’s scientific calculator. When Apple became a publicly traded company in 1980, it was worth an estimated $1.2 billion. In 1985 Apple was losing market share and after a fall out with the CEO John Sculley, Jobs resigned to start up the computer company NeXT and also bought shares in a then small company called Pixar Animation Company. Thanks to Job’s management and leadership, Pixar released Toy Story which was a box office hit and set new standards in animation.

While Pixar succeeded, NeXT was struggling and Apple bought NeXT in 1997 with Jobs returning as CEO of Apple working for $1/year. Jobs completely revitalised Apple and was the brains behind the ipod, iphone, itunes and ipad. (‘Steve Jobs biography’ Elaine J. Hou n.d.) These products which have completely revolutionised our electronic and technological world are all the result of one man’s vision and drive.

When considering Steve Jobs leadership style we will now look at the leader, the follower and the situation:
