TASK 3

Leaders act as visionaries who help individuals to plan, lead, control and organise activities (Jooste, 2004, website). Mullins (2010) stated that leadership is a concept of teamwork, getting along with other people, inspiration and creating a vision.
There are a lot of new challenges in the healthcare setting. Health professionals can’t deny the fact that we are working in an ever changing environment. New approaches, new technologies, new techniques are evolving to improve the quality, safety, efficiency of the healthcare and at the same time to be cost effective.

An effective leader should develop self awareness, identify own strengths and capabilities, acts with integrity, analyse and reflect their own actions and experiences thru a reflective diary for them to develop and become a good leader.
A Clinical Leader should engage in continuing professional development to seek opportunity for learning to deliver a high standard of service to patient.
A good leader should be able to remain calm and focused in time of pressure without compromising own self. Stress is high on a job like this but understanding limits and capabilities will alleviate and prevent stress. Balancing life and work is essential especially with the constant changes that NHS is facing in this crucial time.

Developing networks across the department and outside create opportunities to promote, share, and seek the views of others. Networking is an efficient way to solicit new ideas and access new sources of information. It does bring individuals and teams together. Leaders should build and maintain relationships to others to gain trust and support at the same time encourage them to provide contributions, express their thoughts, giving support and empowering them to gain confidence to take the leadership responsibilities. The introduction of The Productive Operating Theatres (TPOT) to improve the quality of patient and staff experience and focuses on the quality and safety that helps theatres run more productively and efficiently leading to financial savings (website). To achieve this collaboration, acknowledging and appreciating efforts and contributions of individual team members are valued and needed.
