Leadership Scenario

Effective managers that apply leadership theories and motivation theories can create productive employees to reach organizational goals. In the case study “A Question of Motivation” Robbins and Judge (2007) have created two managers for this scenario; Jonathan is the more effective manager who is liked by his employees while Dan is a less effective manager that is not well liked. They also introduce two employees; Stephanie who works for Jonathan she is very happy with her job and has a high respect for Jonathan as her manager. These are all of the necessary functions that are needed for the body and civilization to survive. The next step of the pyramid going up is security needs. These needs include security of body, employment, resources, morality, the family, health and property. These are all of an individual's desire to feel safe and free of harm. Above security needs are social needs, or love and belonging. These needs include things like friendship, family, and sexual intimacy. People have the desire to be loved, and to have companionship, and friendship. Esteem needs are right above social needs. Esteem needs include self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others, and respect by others. These needs are the desire for respect. One must have self-respect and a respect for others. Once esteem needs are met, the next and final steps of Maslow's theory are self-actualization needs. These needs include morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice, and acceptance of facts. These needs refer to the desire to maximize the potential of every individual. At this highest level, people strive to do their best. (Certo & Certo, 2009).
In the case study, “A Question of Motivation”, Robbins and Judge (2007) demonstrate many of these levels of needs. In the first paragraph it states, "Though pay isn't great, it's a steady job that allow them some flexibility, which helps when scheduling classes (Robbins & Judge, 2007, p. 712) This is a sense of safety. This is the security of having a job and still being able to have the security that they can finish their classes at the same time. In the same paragraph it states that Alex and Stephanie have become such great friends. This is an example of social needs. They both have become close because they are in similar situations and they feel like they both belong in the friendship. The difference between Alex and Stephanie's managers lie in the esteem needs. (Certo & Certo, 2009). According to Robbins and Judge (2007) they explain that Alex's manager Dan, overseas the produce department and prefers for his employees to work in the same areas at all times. Stephanie's manager has a very friendly demeanor and is relaxed in his management style. Dan puts down Alex often and Jonathan encourages his workers to expand their horizons by letting out their creative side and working in different sections. Dan is making Alex's self-esteem fall while it is quite the opposite for Stephanie. Stephanie has very high confidence because she is able to be challenged at work with positive results, while Alex is left to feel like he is nothing because his manager doesn't let him strive to be his best. Alex is very disinclined to his tasks which are a lack of achievement while Stephanie is very inclined to do her work. Alex also has a low sense of self-esteem because there is another worker who is doing his same job and has been there for a shorter period of time and is making less...
