Definition of effective leadership in today’s workplace
In today’s workplace, effective leadership is becoming increasingly difficult to master. Leaders are currently encountering a variety of challenges in the workplace. In order to be effective, the leader must be able to deal with all types of people from different generations, with different skill levels, and with different personality traits. A leader must determine the best way to deal with all of these obstacles so that they can influence their team to achieve results and accomplish goals.

As the leader gets to know each employee, they will have a better understanding of what the employee is doing for the organization. The leader will be able to recognize the contribution of an individual and ensure that the person feels valued as an employee. Employees are much more willing to follow a leader who they believe truly cares about them as individuals as opposed to seeing them as a means to an end. The leader must work to develop partnerships with the individuals on their team to best maximize individual contribution as well as motivate workers to achieve a common goal. This goal must be communicated to the team as a shared vision. It is the leader’s responsibility to keep the team informed so everyone is operating with a purpose and understands the reason for their assignments.
By developing a partnership, a relationship will build a foundation of trust which is the cornerstone of a successful team. A leader must foster trust amongst the team or the team will not cooperate, function or be willing to follow the leader. Once the leader develops a relationship with each member of the team, the leader must utilize teambuilding skills to ensure that the team can function as a cohesive unit. Teambuilding skills are essential to creating a productive team.
A team expects their leader to deliver, always keep their word, be approachable, be fair and hold everyone accountable for their results. Essentially, the team must know that they can count on their leader regardless of the situation. They must believe that the leader is someone with integrity. If a leader can openly admit their mistakes and demonstrate the ability to laugh at themselves, they will be viewed as more approachable and credible. A team that knows they can count on their leader will be willing to go the extra mile to accomplish their tasks and goals.
Communication is another key component for being an effective leader and having a successful team. Leaders must frequently share the vision of the organization and department with each member of the team. Expectations must be clearly defined so that everyone is on the same page and working towards a common goal. By keeping the team informed, everyone feels that they are part of the process. This will minimize surprises as they can be disruptive to productivity. Team members must feel supported by their leader which can happen through open communication and feedback on performance. If handled correctly, this demonstrates a sincere interest in the employee’s development and professional growth.
