LAT1 - Serial Killers
This paper that was written explores how a person is born innocent, and evolves into a monstrous and calculated serial killer. It will mention several different specific serial killers and their histories to support the facts. Another area that is explored is the difference between mass murderers and serial killers. Many times theses terms are used simultaneously; however the fact is that they are different. Reviewing the classifications, behaviors, motives, childhood neglect, sanity, and how profiling and other methods will assist in catching a serial killer. Understanding and studying serial killers can help in preventing them to start killing, or in ...view middle of the document...
This cannot be limited to one factor; however the earlier theory suggested that it could be a combination of biological, social, and psychological factors. One theory was that several serial killers had an extra “Y” chromosome which would explain the phenomenon; however no serial killer DNA marker or gene has been identified. (Freeman, Shanna. 2007).
Even after years of studies, interviews, and team efforts, serial killers are a strange phenomenon that is not fully explained. There is no formula that exists that tells us exactly the cause and how to prevent, find, and stop them. There are still many unanswered questions that we are left in attempt to fathom what possesses an individual to commit serial murder. In relation to the cause, most serial killers are men. In fact less than 10 percent are female, however in the 1500’s Elizabeth Bathory aka “The Bloody Countess” she murdered over 600 virgins. In fact, the woman vampire in Bram Stoker’s fifth book was influenced by Bathory. Female serial killers normally do not use the same level of violence or torture that a man will ascend to, however poison is the chosen favorite to kill family, friends, or patients. (Schultz, L. 2010).
Another one of the causes is a “psychopathic personality disorder”, which shows absolutely no empathy for their victims, or the family and friends for their loss. They are commonly referred to as psychopaths, and are also pathological liars. Unfortunately there is no successful treatment which includes rehabilitation. John Gacy was a father and head of a family, well liked, and knew famous political candidates. When they discovered that he had buried over 33 bodies of boys in his basement, he responded without remorse, “I should never have been convicted of anything more than running a cemetery without a license.” (Martin, 2004).
Serial killers usually try to explain the reasons why, or suggest that there is an explanation for the horrible crime. However, with that follows the loss of accountability that serial killers feel and portray to the world, in addition to their lack of responsibility in their behavior. Ted Bundy tried to explain the reason why he started by saying, "I don't know why it started. I don't have any definite answers on that myself. If I knew the true, real reasons why all this started, before it ever did, I wouldn't probably have done any of it." (Keppel, 1995). Ted Bundy has been considered as one of the most prolific serial killers in the USA, which confessed to over 30 murders in 12 states. However many experts believe it is possible that he murdered more than 300 females. (Schultz, 2010).
One of the most asked questions, and studied areas of serial murder is what is the reason “why?” There are many theories and explanations, but “unraveling the making of a serial killer is like aligning a Rubik’s cube”. Serial Killers are simultaneously both fascinating and monstrous. It is hard to believe the reason as to how...
