There are often some huge problems by judging other people way to handle difficult times. In the short story “Land of the lost” by Stewart O´Nans we land in the middle of the main characters life, which is basically build up by the judgment of her surroundings. Like millions of people her life has reach a part where it has taken a descending track. She has lost almost everything of value. She lives alone with a dog and has a pointless job without any meaning to her at all. But who has not tried that? People are so often trying to evaluate how the man next door lives his life and then compare it with their own. She is so sure that she can and will find the girl, that she begins keeping file in her own house. “…but after James Wade confessed that he’d buried the girl some-where west of Kingsville, she began keeping a file” (p. 8. ll. 6-7).
Every moves she takes, seems to make her feel even closer to solving the case. She begins reschedule her working hours, enroll Ollie in an online course for sniffing dogs and buy some more advanced equipment to support her investigation in a new level. On that level she starts pushing her own health in danger because she cannot let go of it. “Her knees creaked, her arms ached… (p. 10. ll. 101-102). It dedicates that her own boundaries keeps getting pushed by her own consciousness and she is willing to go even further to reach her goal.
The main character sees her project as an adventure. Something exciting and fascinating that could put some light into her usually depressing life. Even though she seems a bit crazy, she is still self-aware because she accepts what she is doing is a bit odd and foolish. “The first time was the hardest because she felt foolish” (p. 8. ll. 11-1). But still she chooses to stay on track because it gives her a sense of accomplishment.
“Looking gave her a sense of accomplishment” (p. 8. ll. 20). The main reason for her to keep searching is that she feels needed in a way maybe only she understands. Through the searching she shows a very unique side of her personality. Even though she may seem like a fool digging some holes she got some fantastic values. In the start she does not care about getting the credit, it would be enough to know the girl was finally found. She shows true humanity in her actions and way of thinking. “I’m just trying to help’, she said. ‘If it was one of my kids, I’d want everybody to pitch in’” (p. 9. ll. 48-49). But there are some...
