As a whole the Hebrew bible is 24 books and those are divided into 3 sections; the Torah, Nevi’im and the Ketuvim. The first book the Torah is also called the Pentateuch. It contains all the rules and instructions as they were given to Moses. The five books of Moses are; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The history of Judaism begins with Abraham and the Hebrews being enslaved in Egypt. With Abraham, God called on him to serve and in exchange he would give him many descendents and the land of Canaan. During the early stages the religious practice included sacrifice and prayers at a sacred alter, pillar or tree. This is also where circumcision comes from; it identified them as part of that religious community. During a time of famine the Hebrew tribes migrate into Egypt and there they were enslaved by the Egyptians.
This is where the story of Moses and the ten plagues comes from. During their escape he drowns the pursuing Egyptian Army in the Red Sea. God chose Moses as his tool to help rescue them from slavery.
