The Unknown Truth about Date Rape
Date rape is a problem that seems to be growing every year. The definition of date rape according to Wikipedia, is nonconsensual sexual activity between people who are known to each other, either platonically or sexually. Date rape does not have an age limit or sexual preference, nor does it have a certain ethnicity. This type of violent act could happen to anyone. This act of violence just seems to happen to women more often than men.
It’s very sad, but statistics show that in America a woman is raped every 2 minutes, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, and that sixty-eight percent of all rape victims know their attacker. About twenty-eight percent of all victims are raped by husbands or boyfriends, thirty-five percent by acquaintances, and five percent by other relatives according to, (Violence ...view middle of the document...

The Florida Institute of Technology reports that, one in four college men admit to the use of sexual aggression with women. This type of behavior increases when mixed with drugs and alcohol, which are some of the things that go on at college parties. There are a number of date rape drugs around and the majority make a person feel drowsy, sleepy, nauseated, and can even black out. They can also make it hard for someone to remember what happened.
This type of behavior has got to stop, but the only way to do that is by having the victim report the attack. Many of the victims do not report the attacks because they are ashamed, embarrassed, scared, and then they start thinking that it is their fault it happened. These type of feelings can really prevent a victim from getting help, and make it easier for their attacker to get away and attack again. Victims often feel depressed and very fearful of the opposite sex. There have been reports that many rape victims suffer psychological harm as well as emotional and physical harm. That’s why it is so important to get information out about how to avoid these type of attacks.
There should be more awareness pamphlets given out. Maybe more workshops and seminars should be set up so that women as well as men are made more knowledgeable about this epidemic that is going around. There should be more rape groups established so that the victim does not have to feel that they are going through the ordeal by themselves. We have to let attackers know that we will not sweep date rape under the rug. We must keep raising hell about this sensitive and touchy subject so that it can one day be stopped.
