Health Care Professionals

Identify and describe three reasons there may be a physician shortage rather than a surplus in the United States.

Although previously America had a surplus in Physicians and medical professionals it is no longer the case now.
The first reason for this shortage is that Congress, in its attempt to address the issue of surplus, commissioned the Council on Graduate Medical Education (CGME), which reported that by the year 2000 the expected staffing ratio of one physician for every 370 citizens was more than adequate and that the country would be well advised to scale back on residency funded programs. Analysis of data from the 2000 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses shows that only 7 percent of the licensed RNs not employed in nursing were actively seeking employment in nursing(Health Resources and Services Administration, 2000)
Finally the higher average age of recent graduating classes is also linked to the reason behind the shortage of nurses. This means that by the time these graduates are out of school, they are ready to build a family as opposed to working the hours that the profession requires. Most times for women, their career comes second to their family.

Identify and describe at least three roles the public health professional has in the health care system.
A public health professional must possess proficiency in communication in order to interrelate in with individuals from different cultures, background races tribes and age groups. Through the research that a public health professionals conduct, policies are created thus the professional should be able to collect information.
It is also up to the public health professional to collect information and monitor disease incidence and prevalence in order to create a prevention plan or an intervention plan.
Finally the newest role for public health professionals is surveillance and prevention in bioterrorism and a good example is Anthrax which was a substance used to harm postal workers in America.
