Most consumers use the internet every day whether it’s utilizing it by a smart-phone, laptop, desktop, tablet or some other piece of technology. This allows businesses to communicate with consumers using numerous forms of social media and stay connected. Just staying connected today is so much the norm whether it’s on a business or personal level. The number of social media marketing websites on the internet is truly astounding and they are connecting people from every single city, country and continent on the globe. There is literally no limit to the reach of the internet and this has facilitated immense social interaction. People can keep up to date with hundreds of friends, engage in conversation, share pictures, videos and music and reconnect with friends that they have long lost contact with. The main advantage of social media marketing is cost-related. The majority of social media sites are free to access, create a profile and post information. The advantage of reaching your targeted market for little or no cash investment is substantial, and the audience wanting your information voluntarily joins or follows you. Pay-per-click advertisements on sites such as Facebook are "geo-targeted" according to specific criteria, to reach the correct audience. The viral nature of social media means that each person who reads your posts has the capability to spread the news farther within his own network, so information can reach a large number of people in a short time. Another common use for social media is to handle service outages, answer questions or respond to complaints. This allows a business to protect their brand (in the case of complaints), provide relevant information about their products or services and immediately provide answers to service outages. This helps a company protect their brand by being responsive to their audience and this falls under customer service advantages.
