Internal and External Factors
Every company follows the four functions of management: Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling. As one of the leading competitors in the cell phone industry, here in the United States as well as across the globe, AT&T is no different from any other. If the service went down they would have to determine how to get it up and running again. AT&T has done an amazing job with the four functions of management. They have come a long way in the 138 years since the Bell Company was started.
The constant change in technology comes from innovative minds and innovation comes from trying to make technology better. AT&T has used new, always changing technology and innovation to create one of the largest cellular phone companies in America. Technology and innovation affect all four of the functions of management. The first two functions of management, planning and organizing, are constantly affected by technology and innovation at AT&T. An example would be the Apple iPhone and AT&T partnership. IPhone’s had been exclusively marketed by AT&T until recently. When Apple decided to take their phones to other companies AT&T’s chairman and chief executive officer, Randall Stephenson, had to re-evaluate his company’s plans. He chose to sell dying assets and invest in 4G wireless and says that the wireless world he envisioned when he first entered the telecommunications industry is finally here. After the planning stage he had to organize his company to implement the changes he wanted (Guglielmo, 2013).
Since AT&T’s business deals in the newest technology employees must have extensive training to understand how everything works. With this the third and fourth functions of management, leading, and controlling, come in to play with technology and innovation. In 2008 AT&T University was built in Dallas, Taxes, and has helped develop the leadership skills of 210,000 managers from across the country (Workforce Inclusions, 2013). The managers who attend AT&T University bring back the information and skills taught to them and lead their employees. They are also able to set and obtain goals and identify any problems that need attention for their stores. AT&T has helped the telecommunications industry become one of the biggest industries in America. They have found a way to balance internal and external factors such as new technology and innovation.
AT&T’s culture is made up of people from all walks of life and various backgrounds. The fortune 500 company has diverse roots dating back to the late 1800s. Since then they have grown to serve 292 million people in a coverage area of more than 225 countries, not including their Internet services offered. Through this widespread influence, AT&T has become a leading company recognized by their diverse and multicultural history.
