In order to be ready for leadership, you have to keep a positive attitude and always be looking for learning opportunities (Momeni 2009).
As leaders we are going to have opportunities to bring on new employees to our team. This is a challenge as well because we need to make sure we are interviewing and selecting the right people to join our outstanding team. We as managers need to stay in tune with our teams by setting an example of how an employee performs their daily tasks and that unethical behavior is not permitted (Bruhn 2009). They need to be able to fit in with our culture of ethical behavior and have a willingness to go above and beyond to help another team member when needed. It is important to stay within the employment laws of Equal Employment Opportunity and hire team members based on selection, promotion, performance, and expectations. We need to say away from making a decision based on age, race, or gender as this would not fall within the guidelines of the employment laws and the EEOC. Remember fair employment laws are constantly changing and it’s important to review the revisions and get a good understanding all the affected areas of the change. For example, the EEOC just amended the definition of disability to include a broader interpretation of the term as recently as October 2009 (Minnesota Lawyer 2009).
Another key ingredient to a successful merger is having a good environment for working within a diverse workforce. One of the most important and key elements in working in a diverse work environment is having respect for each team member and their ideas.
