Bribes and Deception
Gregory O. Clark
In the case study this week, I am supposed to be an export manager of a United States steel company that provide heavy beams and plates for huge construction projects. The company that I worked for has been unfruitful the past couple of year and are now looking to generate business oversea in South America. I have been working with a company in South American on a contract that would allow my company to make 20 million dollars. The problem is that this official will not sign the contract until I pay him 20,000 dollars. A bribe is something valuable (such as money or jewels) must be given to someone to get something. ” (Goldberg, 1984, p. 15) I would not pay the bribe because it goes against all of my ethical and moral principles. This is supported in the Bible.
Exodus 23:8 “And you shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.” (Holy Bible, 1971)
Proverbs 15:27 “Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household, but he who hates bribes will live. (Holy Bible, 1971)
The second dilemma faced is should I use the mini tape record in my briefcase to deceive the official into thinking that I have recorded our whole conversation. This could almost be considered a form of black mail to get the official to sign the contract except this wasn’t implement in the being. I was returning to his office to get his signature on the contract which was already agreed upon beforehand. I am not saying that I would do this because even though it doesn’t violate any laws and the official was wrong for the actions he took. I would not do this because even though it doesn’t break any laws but it does goes against what the bible say about deception and dishonesty.
Galatians 6:7-8 “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” (Holy Bible, 1971)
Proverbs 6:16-19 “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord...
