5. Are networks of PCs and servers making mainframe computers obsolete? Explain.
Although networked computers provide some same functions and power as mainframe computers, and they are easy for personal using and controlling, and on the other hand, the mainframe computers have larger size, and are much more expensive than PCs, I do not think that the network of PCs and servers are making mainframe computers obsolete. The mainframe computers are simply far more powerful than PC networks.
Mainframe computers still play an important role in many organizations, like governments, banks, science institutes and airlines. They need to set up very strong firewalls, conduct complex computations at high speed, make a large number of transactions, and analyze large and complicated data. These types of work all need super information processing capability of mainframe computers because of their large storage capability and fast computing power. In fact, mainframe computers can process millions of instructions in a second.
7. Are software suites, Web browsers, and groupware merging together? What are the implications for a business and its end users?
I think that software suits, Web browsers, and groupware are merging together.
Software suites are very likely the most widely used productively software packages. It means that they put many different types of software together. It may include programs like word processor, spreadsheet, presentation graphics, database manager and personal information manager. For example, Microsoft Office, Lotus SmartSuite and Sun's StarOffice are all the famous software suites. It can make exchange of the data between software more convenient. And buying the suite is much cheaper than buying these software separately for users. The programs in the software suite enable users to get their base work done. All their work is like building blocks, and they can be then exchanged and transferred by Web browsers, and shared and collaborated by groupware. Also, several programs in software suites automatically convert documents into HTML, which is the language of the Web.
Web browser is a software package that provides the user interface for accessing Internet, intranet and extranet web sites. There are many famous Web browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. Every day we search information, send email and even discuss with other people through the Web browser. So Web browser is one of the important parts of our daily life. Also, it makes our work more efficiently. It seems that Web browser and the software suite are merging Web browser provides a vehicle for transporting the work created from software suites, and a platform for all activities supported by groupware.
