Minimum Legal Drinking Age Debate
University Affiliation

There are many topics where people have different opinions whereby they either agree or disagree. An example of these topics is should the drinking age be lowered from 21 to a younger age. All states in the United States have their minimum drinking age stated as 21 although there are some exceptions in some states based on consumption at home, medical necessity, under adult supervision and other reasons. This paper is a synthesis on the ideas brought out on the debate of whether the drinking age should be lowered from 21 to a younger age.
The position that I hold on the topic is that lowering the ...view middle of the document...

Alcohol consumption at an early age is influenced by the people one is living around. I believe that once one turns 18 years and they believe they are mature enough to drink it is okay regardless of the influence from parents. This means that alcohol consumption can affect anyone mentally regardless of their age.
The other premise that I do not agree with when it comes to the debate of whether the legal drinking age should be lowered from21 to 18 is that lowering the drinking age would increase the use of illicit drugs. There has been research conducted that shows that young people who consume alcohol have a high likelihood of consuming other illicit drugs. I totally disagree with this point of view. I believe that teens use and get into drugs on a daily basis regardless of whether the drinking limit is reduced or not. In the society today, teens use and abuse illicit drugs not because they were influenced by alcohol but because they choose to.
The last premise is that the MLDA should stay at 21 because people are mature and responsible at this age as compared to 18 years. I do not think that this is true because there are 18 year olds whop are quite mature compared to 21 year olds. Age is not an indicator of maturity but it is just a number (Dejong, & Blanchette, 2014).I selected these specific reasons because I believe that they are the most premises that people use though they are misleading.
People believe that drinking at a younger age would lead to mental issues, though this is a common belief, it is not always true. This is because drinking affects anyone regardless of their age. Another thing that people believe is that drinking leads to the abuse of other drugs. This is not always true since people end up abusing illicit drugs even if they...
