CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION

A storehouse is a temporary reception of materials, components, spare parts and bought parts needed for operational purposes. It is basically an outfit designed for the purpose of holding materials. Furthermore, keeping a database of materials, suppliers, and customers which is normally done manually leads to the loss of vital information that the organisation cannot do without. Notepads and ledgers that were previously used were lost through fire, pilferage by pests and even carelessness on the part of personnel.

Also, stock is usually taken or checked by personnel in the stores department. Inaccurate results are mostly achieved as a result of scams, over-counting and under-counting. This makes the organisation to incur so much loss as a result of these petty mistakes. Recruiting qualified personnel with the requisite knowledge in Information Technology to work in the department is quite expensive.

Computers are generally employed for the purposes of maintaining and manipulating stock records; indeed, stock control is perhaps an ideal area for the application of computers which involve the storage of large volumes of data and the performance of a variety of procedures and processes using a lot of calculations. A computer through a simple application can replace a pile of stock records and cards and maintain a set of information on stock levels and carryout attachments by the touch of a button.

In large organizations where goods are bought into the storehouse in very large quantities and are also fast moving, it may be cost effective to adopt the use of information technology. With the wind of advancement blowing, many organizations have embraced the use of information technology in stores administration. The researchers will look into the usefulness or contributions of information technology in stores administration.
