Immigration as defined by the dicitonary is moving into a place, especially moving to a country of which you are not a native in order to settle there. A sentence to use the word would be, "The increased immigration strengthened the nation".
Inferring from the above statement, you can see that it is what clearly has happened to the United States. Right from the pre-existent Native Americans to today, due to the history of immigration in the United States of America it has earned its title "A Nation of Immigrants".
Before the 1890's, most immigrants arrived from Northern and Western Europe. Immigrants usually migrated for the hopes of attaining what is known as the "American Dream", which pre-1980 meant
- To start a new life
- To make a profit of daily activities
Though this migration came with the various questions and difficulties required to ...view middle of the document...
- gold rush in the united states
- independent lives looking for a refresh on their homepage
and - escape from political turmoil
can be held cultprit for this rate of increase in immigration.
As Immigration soared so did the requirement of safety and security of the natives. Thus, the various procedures to control immigration from all directions were introduced.
For the East it was Ellis Island, Angel Island on the West, islands situated just outside major cities, New York and San Francisco respectively. For the North and South it was the introduction of border systems, which were guarded to steer clear trespassers.
Ellis Island, situated on the East, was the gateway to many of the Europeans and Middle-East Immigrants that arrived after 1890. Ellis Island was created in order to regulate and maintain an ordered process for the acceptance of immigrants. It processed over 400,000 immigrants in it's first year of operation. As the years went by, the numbers increased. The processing the immigrants was simple and same for everyone
- a physical examination
people with highly communicable diseases were usually detained.
- check whether they met the legal requirements
that is- no criminal record
-ability to work
-had the access to atleast $25
Even though these were meant to restrict the entering of some immigrants, only about 2% were detained every year.
Angel Island was just the West Coast version of Ellis Island, and it welcomed people from Asia.
As for Mexico and Canada, it was just the implementation of borders and security along the lines. Although, no proper security measures did cause illegal immigration.
With the increase in immigration, social diversity increased. America soon was turning into a melting pot.
