Humanistic And Social Development Essay

There are many types of Physical Education, but the one I am going to talk about today is Humanistic and Social Development, and how it relates to Physical Education. First off, the primary objective of early physical education programs was a person’s physical health. Humanistic and social development emphasizes self-awareness and choice as a basis for personal growth. With a humanistic approach, there is a connection between physical education and a person’s social and emotion well-being.

I think this is the other most important tenet because it is saying that if a kid feels bad about themselves than they will not do good. On the flip side, if a student feels really good about themselves, even if they do not know a lot they can still succeed and learn. The fifth and final tenet is no one is better able, at least potentially, than the person himself to determine how he best learns and what is most meaningful for him to learn. This tenet means that if a student does not want to learn something in class, then they will not. The student wants to learn something that is meaningful for them and might be able to be useful in their future.
There are also four humanistic goals, which are taken into theoretical considerations. The first humanistic goal is self-esteem, which says, man strives to achieve self-esteem and self-actualization to continually upgrade his own adequacy to cope with his own life. This is saying self-esteem and how you feel need to be upgraded throughout your whole life in order to make your life better. The next goal is self-actualization, according to Maslow’s theory of motivation, physical ability development is the major contribution of physical education to self-actualization. Self-actualization ties into self-esteem in the fact that they both are trying to upgrade your own life to make it better. The third humanistic goal is self-understanding, which means a healthy self-perception provides a good foundation for becoming what one is capable of. This also ties into the first two goals, but also expands on the person and how well they know themself. A person with good self-understand knows what sport they can or cannot play, for example a short person isn’t going to the guard in the NBA, or a 130 pound guy isn’t going to be a football linemen. The final goal is interpersonal relationships, if physical education is to have any impact on interpersonal relationships it must emphasize the value of such qualities as cooperation and sensitivity towards others. Interpersonal relationships could be considered one of the most important goals when physical education is involved because it promotes teamwork and respect towards others which students can use in the future in the world, and not just for physical education.
There are many changes that can be done to implement different goals and developments. One can start by trying to humanize physical education. A truly humanistic approach to physical education embraces both formal programs and the physical activities that people typically engage in, and has a number of specific goals, all of which are under the objective of moving each individual toward social and emotional well-being. Once again there are four goals to try to humanize physical education, these go along with the other humanistic theoretical goals.
