As Mohawk continues to grow domestically and broaden globally the company will become more diverse, employees will possess different views of what is considered acceptable behavior in the workplace and this will undoubtedly create ethical conflicts. Mohawk has established a Code of Conduct to help guide employees in their decision making, promote high standards on the job, create a set of benchmarks to evaluate performance and strengthen the company's identity. There are many areas where ethical issues arise and those who work in the field are usually called upon to help determine what will be best for all parties involved, including the company.
Everyday someone somewhere is challenged with an ethical issue, and it’s not necessarily in the workplace. Ethical issues can include sexual harassment, which is the unwanted sexual advances: unwanted sex-related behavior toward somebody, e.g. touching somebody or making suggestive remarks, especially by somebody with authority toward a subordinate. Another ethical issue where human resource management would be required to act is any instance of racial and other discrimination, which is defined as treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit. Finally is the breach of confidentiality, which is the unauthorized disclosure of personal information that has been provided in confidence. When these issues are compromised it is the negative consequences of these very serious violations that can be harmful to the entire company. Human Resources professionals must determine what direction they will take, right or wrong and make the decision using their own worldview in combination with the company’s Code of Ethics.
Sexual harassment is defined as being unlawful to harass a person because of that person’s sex. It occurs when one employee makes continued, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, to another employee, against his or her wishes and has to be repeated and pervasive (www.eeoc.gov/laws/types). An example is a case where William Donald Schaeffer, a comptroller from Maryland, once told a 24-year-old female assistant who had just brought him some tea, then beckoned her back and asked her to "walk again”. This was considered sexual harassment for several reasons: first, the inappropriate request made the woman feel uncomfortable, the offensive action was based on her gender and because he was a figure of authority, his request became a command.

Employment discrimination (or workplace discrimination) is discrimination in hiring, promotion, job assignment, termination, and compensation. It can also include various types of harassment (www.wikipedia.org/wiki/discrimination). There are four major types of employment discrimination, and other types can usually be dealt with in regard to one of them. They are: race, sex, age and disability. Race is generally defined as a person’s ancestry or ethnic characteristics, everyone is a member of some race and it is illegal to discriminate against anyone in the workplace on the basis of race.
