Employees are more likely to perform if they feel connected to the sustainability approach of the company and somehow their own performance is linked to the sustainability practices followed by them. It encourages employees to come up with new and innovative sustainability practices which are profitable for both company and environment.
2. What HRM practices do you believe are important in supporting sustainability? Provide examples to support your analysis.
Sustainable HRM refers to the efforts put in order to create a workforce having values, trust and motivation towards a profitable social, environmental and financial balance( triple bottom line)
Some key HRM practices which support sustainability are:
o Putting emphasis on long-term employment which helps avoid disruptions in lives of the employees and their families
o HR manager must ensure that HRM system is aligned with sustainability. HR must ensure good job recruitments, trainings and programs so as to enhance employee productivity, revenue generated and return on investment.
o Time-based practices- it includes flexible work time, job sharing, leave for new parents.
E.g. Folksy.com which is UK`S largest online marketplace for handcrafted goods has majority of employees working part time and its revenue has grown by 10% over past few years.
Edward Jones which is 4th largest financial service firm offers job sharing and compressed work weeks.
