Effective leadership is a necessary element to have successful work teams and organizations. Those who are effective leaders employ ideas and practices that facilitate a working environment that nurtures the idea of success and making the company’s goals a top priority. Prosperous leaders do not directly demand their subordinates to complete their own and the company’s biddings. Rather, they provide a gentle, guiding hand in directing the employees in bringing out their best without any judgment or any form of hindrances from their supervisors in the form of their own actions and behavior.

, p.492). Wadu reports to his supervisor, the deputy director, on a bi-weekly basis to report his employees’ production results for the previous pay period. He represents those who did not perform to the standards of the deputy director, and also takes full responsibility in not enforcing their views. While this may make him look as if he is the bad guy, he also represents those who have questions, comments, and concerns related to their jobs. One could say that he acts as the liaison for both his supervisor and the employees, but with a preference towards the employees as he knows that he was once in their positions.
Another noticeable behavior was his recognition of employees regarding their working habits. Time after time, he will at one point or another mention a positive or negative behavior or trend he notices with a few employees he keeps a close eye upon (Colquitt et al., p. 492). The mentioning of behaviors to others serves as a form of guidance as he attempts to positively change the other’s working habits. For example, he would mention how one employee consistently completes the review of all amended applications at the beginning of a fiscal quarter to someone who consistently completes their amendments at the last minute. Another example is him mentioning how someone continuously falls into a stressful dilemma when he does all of his required work quota at the end of a fiscal quarter to someone who is on the verge of following in the first person’s work habits. These examples show his approval and disapproval of behavior that is either an enhancement or a hindrance to one’s career. The casual mentioning of the behaviors provides a subtle warning or form of advice for an employee who is possibly veering from the path of success. They also provide a subtle indication of what working habits he considers as appropriate and inappropriate.
One critical factor Wadu constantly stresses upon is production as all examiners’ jobs depend upon it. Production is defined as “setting goals and providing incentives for the effort and productivity of the employees (Colquitt et al., p.492).” As I have stated in class discussions, production is the key factor in determining our employment at the office. Each examiner is expected to review a predetermined amount of applications that is determined by the use of a complex formula using the allotted hours for an examiner’s current grade scale and an assumed amount of time that would take an average employee to complete the task. Wadu monitors each employee’s production at the beginning of each pay period as the reports for a previous pay period are available at the beginning of the following pay period. He closely monitors each one to determine if his examiners are setting themselves up for a stressful situation where they will be scrambling to meet their quota at the end of a fiscal quarter.
