Raymond Heller

Hum. 176

Movies and television has been the biggest forms of entertainment since there creation. These days we have a lot of different types of visual entertainment such as, video games, cell phones, and computers, along with movies and television. Movies were first invented in the 1880’s. Motion pictures were exhibited as a carnival novelty, and then developed into one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment. Television also has its advantages, you are able to watch the news and be more informed with what is going on in the world, and it is a source of entertainment for the whole family.

I think that the social influences of visual entertainment are no more positive than they are negative. There are both positive and negative influences that are show on television. I think these days the negative influences are able to be controlled, because every cable provider lets you set up and block certain channels that you do not want your children to be exposed to, but you can not block every channel and your child is still at risk of being exposed to negative influences no matter what channel they are watching. Another thing that I see with television and movies, is that it makes me feel lazy, instead to using my imagination and doing something to entertain myself I just sit on the couch and watch TV or a movie. I think that watching television can make a person lack creativeness. There are also positive influences. There are some shows that are very informational and beneficial for learning, an example of this would be the history channel or the news channels. Most news stations broadcast live and this enables you to get information as soon as they can get it to you, making you more informed with what is going on in the world. Another thing is that the newspapers only give you so much information as news stations have continuous coverage. I think it just all depends on what you watch on TV, it could either be positive or negative, you have a choice of what you watch on TV so it is up to the person watching it.
