Consequently, a dilemma arises in organizations since repeated promotions generally place an employee in a management role and employers are challenged to provide alternative career paths for employees who deserve the benefits and recognition provided by a promotion however who do not wish to manage the work of other employees. 1
All employees must be eligible for promotions that recognize and reward their role as contributors to the organizations success. A promotion is a powerful method to communicate to employees about what is valued within an organization as such a promotion must be available to employees who play any role in the contribution of work and value.
Promotions can be done both internally and externally and they are used to fill the positions which are seen as more important to be filled than the current position that the employee is holding. It can be filled by hiring externally but however if any employees have the eligibility and experience must be appointed for their motivation. Also it will decrease labor turn over as external recruitment costs more and the increase in salary and status will increase job satisfaction. Promotion can be classified as Up Gradation and Dry Promotion. Up Gradation is when a pay is increased without any changes in an employee’s job and dry promotion is when a higher position is given without any change in salary.
