How To Write About Africa Essay

1064 words - 5 pages

The main purpose of this article is strictly the viewpoint from his life and retrospect of what others think about Africa. The author is opening your mind and dropping a variety of contrasting nuggets since it is believed most westerners have misconceptions of Africa’ existence believing it is all inclusive of starving Africans in an uncivilized environment. Wild animals roaming the countryside for their next meal, while tamed animals await their next command.
The key question that the author is addressing is “How do you see Africa?” A person having the ability of seeing Africa through the pupils of the readers eyes instead of the letters in a book or pictures in a frame depicting evil, ...view middle of the document...

The author lures you in with pity for their fellow man, describing naked dead bodies, or rotting naked bodies, or pretending as though there were no well-adjusted Africans. The author continues to hypnotize you with words like prominent ribs, or it is hot and steamy with very short people who eat primates, or animals trampling through town killing or severely injuring people, or wild animals devouring folks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After luring you in to the world of pity by ignorance, the authors throws fireballs detoxifying your mind by showing you an Africa that has many of the same necessities the westerners boast about like Schools, Offices, Building , or factories to name a few.
The key concept in this article is “Don’t judge a book by its cover” The most important concept is or should be when you are forming an opinion about a continent, country, a city or specific region, or simply anything. Do not base your decision on what is told to you by others but rather form your own opinion by reading a book, visiting, or even research the internet. Many readings, videos, and YouTube give insight to Africa as a whole such as in South Africa she has some of the most impressive museums and art galleries. Ancient Egypt is known for the pyramids and Egyptian queens, the Blue Nile, or North Africa being the largest exporters of grain, fruit, figs, and beans. Other learning material available will teach you about how monies sent to African nations for direct aid are misused by corrupt governments, and/or spent by developed nations, which increased starvation, of humans and animals and the inability to supply safe drinking water, which would prevent the water-borne disease that torment many humans and animals.
Am I a hypocrite? Am I one to have the same misconception about Africa, or is the author taking for granted that everyone outside of Africa is ignorant about Africa and her people; Those are questions that enter in my head as I think about what Binyavanga is saying. Although he is very witty, speaking with an abundance of knowledge in his description...
