How To Reduce Teen Suicide Essay

1750 words - 7 pages

The word ‘Suicide,’ as defined by Merriam-Webster.com, is the act of killing yourself because you don’t want to continue living. To most people suicide is a scary word. When someone hears the word ‘suicide’ they go into a different state of mind and almost completely ignore the fact that the word was said, this needs to change. Suicide has become the third leading cause of death in humans ages fifteen to twenty-four. The only other causes higher are accidents and homicide. (Stibich). The rate of teenage suicide has grown rapidly in recent years, and the suffering communities seem to just turn a blind eye on the issue. In an attempt to reduce the atrocity that is teen suicide, some steps need ...view middle of the document...

(M.A). Saying goodbye fore the last time means that the person saying goodbye intends on never seeing the other person again. This should be a huge trigger to anyone who is close to the suicidal teen. When someone says goodbye as if it is for the final time, the other person involved in the conversation must immediately notice it and try to talk about what the problem is before it gets worse.
Teen suicide is nearly four times more common today than it was a few decades ago. (Arenofsky). Four times more common is a dramatic jump in terms of numbers. This stat could possibly be rising due to the amount of mental illnesses that are in the world today. Another way that teen suicide can be reduced is by treating the mental illness that accompanies most suicide cases. Mayo Clinic.com describes mental illness as a wide range of mental health conditions – disorders that affect your mood thinking or behavior.
“Over 90 percent of people who die by suicide have a mental illness at the time of their death and the most common mental illness is depression.” (Caruso) Some people have no idea as to what depression is. Depression may be described as feeling sad, blue, unhappy, miserable or down in the dumps. Most of us feel this way at one time or another for short periods. (National Library of Medicine). Depression and just being sad are two different things. A person may be sad because they dropped their ice cream on the ground but it isn’t going to effect them for a long period of time. Depression is a serious illness that affects about 17 percent of the U.S. population. (Lu). If depression can be reduced in some way, then suicide can also be reduced.
If the definition of ‘depression’ is confusing, there are some ways that it can be identified. According to Norman Young, a member of the Cardiff University Health Board, some of these examples could be: loss of interest and enjoyment, changed appetite and disturbed sleep. All of these examples can be a revealer of suicidal thoughts. If any of these actions are taken, treatment of the depression is absolutely necessary.
Along with the examples described above, questions can be asked to the potential victim. These questions can help to identify whether or not a person is depressed or just sad. Some of these questions include: “During the past month have you been bothered by feeling down, depressed or hopeless?” or “During the past month have you been bothered by having little interest or pleasure in doing things?” (Young). Now, if these questions are answered with a ‘yes’ then it is very likely that the teenager is suffering from depression.
If there were only some way to treat depression, then there may be a possibility of reducing suicide as well. Luckily there are ways to treat depression, many ways in fact. Many depressed teenagers are suffering because of their life style. It could be from a poor home life or social life. There are a couple of ways that the correct lifestyle change can be made. Just...
