Unethical practice of receiving kickbacks, bribing, personal interest will harm the organization and it influences the entire team adversely. Personal preferences contribute to overall performance, productivity and also the ethics of an organization. This is why companies have reward and reprimand policies to motivate employees and keeping them checked under the company’s policies.
2. Discuss how organization policies and procedures can impact ethics.
Organization policies and procedures can impact ethics immensely. Since, the policies and practices in an organization binds all employees, it has a tremendous influence on the ethics of a company. It is very true that ethics starts from an individual then it carries on to a group and then to a large group and the whole organization. As individuals are the building block of any organization, it is significant that a whole group is clear on ethics.
According to Merriam –Webster (2002), “ethics is the discipline dealing with what is good and bad or right and wrong or with moral duty and obligation”. Ethics change from organization to organization and it depends on the organization policies and procedures. The ethic of best buy might be different from a small electronic shop that has a few locations. Likewise, a small self owned restaurant might have different policies and guidelines than a big upscale restaurant with thousands of employees. Qualities like teamwork, integrity, professionalism and dedication start from an individual level and the organizational policies and procedure helps employees to work towards the good of the organization.
3. Discuss the ethical dilemmas that Valerie is facing.
Valerie is going through an ethical dilemma and she tries to evaluate and analyze her situation. She has her personal obligation on one side and other hand she has her company’s obligation. She clearly knows what to do but not how and when to deal with her dilemma.
As she is not a US Citizen or a permanent resident puts her future in jeopardy. On one side she has her school, her stay in the country could be cut short, she could be jobless and on the other side, she wants to turn her boss in to the upper management. Her decision could end up getting the whole team jobless or it could put her future in trouble.
