History Essay

547 words - 3 pages

During my sophomore year of high school I decided to attend Trinity Lutheran Church, located in South Minneapolis, Minnesota. After only a few months of attending this church, my youth group decided to sign us up to help hand out information about our church along with boxes of food in one of the more poverty stricken and self-destructive neighborhoods in Minneapolis. We were working within our youth groups, going from one apartment building to another, handing out the boxes of food and praying for the families who allowed us to do so. It was about ten thirty at night when our group had only one last box that we were told to give away. I offered to give the last box; I ...view middle of the document...

I tried to as her again but this time in Spanish, she looked up and shook her head no, again in Spanish I asked if anyone else was in the apartment right now, and she shook her head no once more. I was at a loss for words, so I knelt to the ground and reached my arms out towards her. I didn’t move but rather sat there and watched as she slowly stepped into the hallway. She had such an innocent and yet frightened look on her face. It reminded me of myself when I was in 8th grade. I will never be able to forget that young girls face. As she walked closer towards me I examined what she was wearing. She wore a dirty blue dress that was torn at the bottom, and was too small for her to fit. She had gorgeous long, dark brown-black, curly hair that looks uncombed for at least three days. Her eyes were big, round, and dark like her hair, her eyelashes were long and showed off the innocence in her eyes. She continued to take small steps towards me, when she was close enough, she wrapped her arms around me and laid her hair on my shoulder, as if comfortable, and safe. She was squeezing me as if she had no intensions of letting go. I set the box of food just inside the door and left a brochure and prayer book on top of the book. I stood up and watched as the little girl disappeared behind the door. Then I walked back to my youth group, talked to them about what I had just experienced. I knew not what to do. All I could think to do was leas my group in prayer, and realize that hope is what we all need.
