High School Vs. College Essay

852 words - 4 pages

As I started to attend college, I noticed an array of differences between it and high school. As soon as I stepped on campus, I thought things would be a little different, but I didn’t realize how much of a drastic change it really is. The actual time spent in class is very different, and your time needs to be managed in order to do well on your tests. The college environment is a lot better, and a lot of money is involved. The main differences between college and high school are the classes, your personal freedom, and your teachers.Classes are a lot different in college than they are in high school. First of all, in high school, you spend eight hours a day, five days a week in classes. In college you're only in school six to sixteen hours spread out through an entire week. You have a lot more freedom to have a job, and to do other things. Plus, with all the extra time you get, it gives you plenty of time to study for your tests. In high school, you automatically moved from ...view middle of the document...

I went to UTSA for one semester, and it was very hard for me to get help understanding a subject, in the middle of the class. I couldn’t just get up and talk to the teacher if I was having a misunderstanding. In high school, if I was having a problem, I would just get out of my seat and ask the teacher for any help that I needed. It was a lot easier to get help in high school than it is in college.First of all, high school is mandatory, and it cost little or no money at all, where as college coasts a bunch of money, and it’s a totally voluntary step in furthering your education. In high school the only reason that you would need money, is maybe for a field trip or any other special events, but in college everything costs money. I didn’t think that college would be that expensive, but boy was I wrong. Everything from books to classes, and even parking to go to school comes out of your wallet. Another thing that is big is that you are on your own now. Everything you do when you sign up for thing goes to your name. Your parent’s names are not on anything, and they don’t help you out as much anymore. For me my parents gradually stopped providing for me, and made me learn how to provide for myself, and to stop mooching off of them. The teachers in college, lecture, and expect you pinpoint what the important points are. In high school important points were written on the board for you to write down and to just study right from the notes. Sometimes college professors don’t even follow the books and it is very easily to get lost in a subject, and that’s where good noted comes in. I think it is mandatory for high school teachers to follow the book, which is very easily to understand and to follow.I think if you combine some things in college to some things in high school, you can get the perfect school. In my opinion college is a lot better, even though it costs a bunch of money. Just having all the freedom to do what you want and being all alone is worth it all. I never liked having to be controlled by the high school that I used to go to. They treated us as if we were robots telling us our every next move. So if I could choose to go back to high school, that would be a definite “NO”.
