Culture is defined as the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society group place of time (Culture, 2013). The heritage assessment tool is a great method used to assess health maintenance, protection, and restoration of each individual’s cultural beliefs. The heritage assessment tool is often used by healthcare providers to help determine different cultural beliefs that may or may not impact an individuals care. The parents carried it when the children were young, but as each child has grown they have obtained their own insurance. Still to this day each member sees a physician on a yearly basis. The Bigelow family is involved with health protection, by eating healthy, and exercising daily. Every person in this family is in great shape. All members of the family are members of a local gym that they attend at least three times weekly. This family takes pride in being healthy. They eat meals from the basic food groups. The Bigelow’s state “we rarely eat fast food, if we do its when we are traveling and feel like having one bad day.” Health restoration plays an important role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Both parents in the Bigelow family state that growing up their parents were smokers, which made them become smokers. The mother states she quit after 1 year of smoking and decided to become healthy because of her children. Both parents state they have been smoke free for over 26 years. They state restoring their health was the best thing they could ever do. (M. Bigelow, 2013)
The second interview conducted was with a Hispanic family (The Anaya’s) all of which play an active role in the catholic religion. The Anaya family consists of both parents, and four children. Each child in the Anaya family also has children of their own. The entire Anaya family was born and raised in Mexico, and moved to the United States approximately 20 years ago. All members of the family currently reside in either Arizona or California. They all keep very close contact with one another. The Anaya family states they visit their extended family at least once a year. The Anaya’s native language is Spanish, which they speak when communicating with one another. The children and father are all bilingual; they speak both English and Spanish. The Anaya family states, “Family is important in maintaining good health.
