chronic diseases. Regular exercise can help you prevent - or manage - high blood pressure. Your cholesterol will benefit, too (4). Regular exercise boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol while decreasing low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad," cholesterol (4). Exercise helps you manage your weight. No one is saying that you have to go out and run a marathon, but it would not hurt to take a walk or ride a bicycle once in a while. The combination of not eating healthy and not exercising can increase the health risks in one’s life. Take for example; “If you are significantly overweight, you have a greater risk of developing many diseases including high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some

forms of cancer. For obese adults, even losing a few pounds or preventing further weight gain has health benefits”(2). We also need to make sure our children are eating healthy and getting the proper amount of exercise. The Bogalusa study (the pediatric version of the Framingham study) showed that overweight children are likely to become obese adults. Approximately 70 percent of children with BMI above 95th percentile had adult obesity. In contrast, only seven percent of children less than the 50th percentile for weight became obese adults. Adults who were overweight in childhood have higher levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and insulin, with low HDL cholesterol levels and increased prevalence of diabetes mellitus(5).
