Today the health care industry is facing a changing financial and clinical environment and a relationship shift between patients, physicians, insurance companies, hospitals, and government. As costs continue to spiral out of control, operations management (OM) becomes even more important in eliminating waste and reducing costs to ensure financial success and excellent patient care results. A supportive information technology system is vital to the success of the company. This technology infrastructure supports key operational processes and produces key management reports essential for effective managing. Quality management can incorporate the use of six-sigma by implementing quality initiatives using participatory management style, employee involvement, and empowerment with investments in training, development, and learning (Hanna & Sethuraman, 2005). Many opportunities exist to create improvements in the ability of health care organization’s materials and facilities departments to maximize the workflows related to materials management and inventory and supply chain management. Maximizing workflows reduces costs associated with these processes as well. The development of a strong corporate mission, vision, and values provides added direction for management and staff. Strategic operations support the hospital mission and business strategy, and assist the organization in gaining the competitive advantage in the community (Hanna & Sethuraman, 2005).
