1.What are the essential nutrients? What is the main function of each one?The essential nutrients for health are: water, carbohydrates, minerals, fiber, fats, proteins, and vitamins.The main function of each one is:Water helps transport nutrients, removes wastes, and regulates the body's temperature. Water carries nutrients along the digestive path to the cells by liquefying food and moving it through the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. When food is absorbed into the blood water regulates the concentration of nutrients on both sides of the cell walls.Carbohydrates are the body's primary source of energy. They add flavor to food and are essential for the body's absorption of fat-soluble vitamins which are vitamins A, D, E, and K. There are different types of fats which are saturated fats found in meats, eggs, milk, dairy products, palm oil and coconut oil, all which are found in animal products. These types of fats are also the ones that clod your arteries which can cause a heart attack or high blood pressure. The other type of fat is unsaturated which are either polyunsaturated or monounsaturated and both can lower body cholesterol. Examples of polyunsaturated fats are corn oil, soybean oil, and cottonseed oil and some fish. Monounsaturated fats are found in peanut oil, olive oil, and canola oil. Trans fatty acids are believed to be the worst type of fat because they lower the body's good cholesterol and increase the body's bad cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatlike substance that is made by the liver and is necessary for certain body functions including the formation of the sex hormone, vitamin D and bile.Proteins are the building blocks of the body. They provide the structural framework for the skin, hair, nails, cartilage, tendons, and muscles. They also provide an important structural part of the bones and are essential for the body's growth and maintenance, the regulation of body processes, and the replacement of body cells. Nine amino acids can not be made by the body so they must be eaten everyday to ensure an adequate protein supply as they are essential for health. The reason proteins must be eaten everyday is because they are not stored they are used up by the body in a matter of hours to make muscle. A complete protein contains all nine of the essential protein and can be found in animal products such as eggs, meat, milk, poultry, fish and cheese. Incomplete proteins are proteins that don't have all nine of the essential proteins and are divided into three groups which are grains, legumes (starchy peas, beans, and lentils), and vegetables. Foods from the grain group must be combined with the foods from the legume or vegetable group in order to get all the required nine proteins. Vitamins are the tools used by the body to process food. They do not supply energy but they help release it from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. They occur in food as either fat-soluble or water-soluble substances. In the fat-soluble substances vitamins A, D, E, and K, are stored by the body's fat cells. The water-soluble vitamins which are the B and C vitamins are not stored by the body and amounts not used by the body are secreted in urine. Water-soluble vitamins must be eaten daily and include the B vitamins including thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine (B6), cyanocobalamin (B12), folic acid, pantothenic acid, and biotin. Most people do not need to purchase vitamins as they get them from the foods they consume so unless they are pregnant, seriously ill, don't eat balanced meals, burn victims or serious accident victims they buying vitamins is a waste...
