Hazards of Social Media in today’s Society
Are social networking sites putting us in danger? Social Media is a familiar tool used in today’s society. The media networks out there such as: Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and YouTube let people stay in touch with families, connect with potential employers, and meet different people all over the world. Social networking is also a platform for obtaining current events at a moment’s notice. Along with these so could networks that allow you to stay in touch with the world, they have their potential dangers. These dangers can include public viewing of your personal life, and prone to sexual predators.
Social media sites are virtual communities that can be publically viewed by anyone and everyone. Pictures, videos, and personal information continually get posted even with privacy statements.(Gail, Uy K 2010).All while people think they are safe from having certain people view their profiles, there is ...view middle of the document...
In high school cyber bullying is something that has grown out of control, and had definitely made parents very concerned, especially when it comes to sexual predators. It has gotten to the point where the FBI has gotten involved. (Vanderlaan, Jon 2011)
Sexual predators are consistently viewing random profiles for likely victims. The scary thing about these at risk violators is that they can be anyone without prior convictions. It may be easy to keep a watchful eye on those who are now on parole, but what about the ones who have never been caught? A prime example of those who haven’t been caught is the show “How to Catch a Predator”. Almost all of these would-be criminals didn’t have prior violations. Now not only are unwanted people viewing your social profile, but potential employers are also viewing, and cross referencing social network sites.
Employers are finding reasons to not hire you. They do this by scanning your social media network sites. Employers are trying to see what type of person you are outside of your work environment. The funny thing about the Internet is once it's out there; it doesn't go away (Sanford Herald, 2010). This is probably the main cause that a lot of people can’t find employment. Hiring managers post their open positions, and many people apply. One way they cut potential candidates is to screen social media sites. Although social media can be a good way to connect with employers a good way to possibly keep employers from seeing what you don’t want to see is make two separate sites.
Social networks are dangerous to our personnel lives. They expose your personnel information, friends, families, and yourself to total strangers. Though social media has its short comings, if it is used properly it can be a great tool to use in day to day actions such as; staying in touch with family and friends. To avoid any vulnerabilities try keeping your life as private as you can.
