Groups and Teams
An explanation of the difference between a group and a team will be addressed. By definition groups and teams are not the same thing. Workplace diversity has an important role in an organization. Diversity covers areas beyond race and gender. Diversity can affects the dynamics of a team in positive and negative ways.

Four of the most common types of teams are [problem-solving, self-managed work teams, cross-functional teams, and virtual teams] (Schermerhorn, Jr., Hunt, & Osborn, 2008).
Problem solving teams are made of five to twelve employees from the same department who meet to talk about ways to improve work environment, quality, and efficiency. Although the team would share suggestions, they usually did not have the authority to implement change. Self-managed work teams can take the place of some managers. These teams come up with a plan to fix a problem and are responsible for the result. Self-managed work teams are 10 to 15 employees who have related jobs. They select their members and check each other’s performance. Cross-functional teams are individuals from the same level in an organization, but from different areas. The main function of a cross-functional team is to complete an assignment. All teams but virtual meet face-to-face. A virtual team uses computer technology to get work accomplished. One drawback of using a virtual team is the lack of socialization between team members.
Diversity in the workplace is an issue many organizations deal with. Mentally disabled workers are joining the workforce in repetitive jobs that bore other workers.
