Good Will Hunting Essay

683 words - 3 pages

Inexperienced Criticizer

The saying is very true that you can't judge a book by it's cover. No person can tell someone else what they've been through or how it feels to be them if they haven't had a walk in their shoes. That's the problem with today’s society now, judgment. Many people judge and criticize others before even getting to know that person. In the film, “Good Will Hunting”, Will judged Sean just from a painting he had on the wall. The description Will had given Sean of the painting sounded like he described himself.
I feel that Will is the man on the boat lost in a storm and it's ironic how he felt that person was Sean when in actuality it was him all along. Will is the man on the boat lost in the storm because he's very afraid and lost in the world. He's unsure of what he wants and he's afraid to ...view middle of the document...

In the film, Sean tells Will that he doesn't have the faintest idea what he's talking about because he hasn't experienced aspects of life to think he knows about someones life when he's barely lived his own. Will felt that because he was so book smart he could read a person from personal objects they possess but in reality you can't unless you hear their story or have similar experiences. Will and Sean both had been abused as a child so they may know how it feels for one another in that type of situation. I believe that's why Will is so closed up and private because of what he experienced in his childhood. He was a troubled child because in the movie when he was in court the judge said he had talked his way out of jail time on multiple occasions so he's been in trouble with the law a lot.
With Will being the man on the boat lost in the storm he finds his way to shore at the end of the movie. He drives to go find his love and at that moment he had progressed and was no longer afraid to let people in thanks to Sean. I feel that if not for Sean, Will would have never came out of his shell and actually lived his life without certain cautions. He would have been swallowed up by the storm if he didn't connect with Sean and let him in.
No one likes to be judged especially when the judgment is false or negative which is why Sean blew up the way that he did. More people need to get to know a person or just keep their opinions to themselves because criticizing does nothing but cause problems. Sean could see right through Will because of his actions and how he tried to describe him from a painting. It's sometimes said that a person will judge someone else to feel better about their self. Will wasn't happy with who he is, he didn't even know what he wanted to do with his life. But at the end of the film he found his way out of the storm and into a calm sea. At that point he found himself which is what he had been looking for all along.
